Description

Parents may seek out advice and support at many times throughout the years from the day their child is born. Early questions they may ask of seasoned veterans of parenting may be about how to get a baby to sleep through the night, how to potty train, how to handle a tantrum, etc. But later, when they discover that their child is gay, there are not many obvious places to turn for advice and support. Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) is that place. CU PFLAG is a local chapter of a national non-profit organization with over 200,000 members and supporters and over 500 affiliates in the United States. In was conceived in 1972, soon after Jeanne Manford marched with her gay son in New York's Pride Day parade. She was approached by LGBT individuals begging her to talk to their parents, so she decided to begin a support group. Although, primarily a parent support group, every PFLAG group has its own, unique membership. Groups may be more or less politically active, visible in the community, and diverse in composition. Champaign-Urbana PFLAG is attended by parents and friends as well as LGBT individuals and focuses on providing support, resources and education to each other and the community.
