LGBTQ+ Standards of Care:
As an LGBTQ+ affirming healthcare practitioner, I understand that all LGBTQ+ populations are deserving of healthcare and the healing resources they need to live full, healthy, vibrant lives. To offer these services, I agree to:
- Engage in learning opportunities to enhance my ability to provide culturally competent, knowledgeable healthcare for LGBTQ+ individuals.
- Ensure that staff are appropriately trained and actively participate in all aspects of providing a safe and trusted healthcare environment for LGBTQ+ patients.
- Utilize and encourage inclusive language. Some examples of this include:
- Using gender-neutral language when pronouns are unknown,
- Providing written and verbal opportunities for patients to provide their chosen name and pronouns,
- Training all front-line staff around standards of respect towards transgender folks, including: using their name, and referring to them by their pronouns, and
- (if applicable) Using the term “relationship status” on intake forms instead of “marital status,”, and including options like “partnered”, or “partner” when appropriate.
- Create a welcoming physical environment for LGBTQ+ patients. Some examples of this include:
- Displaying brochures (multilingual when possible and appropriate) about LGBT health concerns, such as breast cancer, safe sex, hormone therapy, mental health, substance use, and sexually transmitted diseases,
- Disseminating or visibly posting a non-discrimination statement stating that equal care will be provided to all patients, regardless of age, race, ethnicity, physical ability or attributes, religion, sexual orientation, or gender identity/expression,
- Acknowledging relevant days of observance in your practice such as World AIDS Day, LGBT Pride Day, and National Transgender Day of Remembrance, and/or
- Displaying LGBT-specific media, including local or national magazines or newsletters about and for LGBT and HIV-positive individuals.
- Provide reproductive and sexual health counseling, screening, testing, and examinations based on individual needs of patients, regardless of gender identity (when applicable).
- Provide information about options for gender-affirming medical treatment and surgical procedures for patients who desire these services
- When options are unknown, agreement to contact UP or seek referrals is understood.
- Establish referral resources to ensure that patients have access to knowledgeable, culturally competent providers who can meet LGBTQ+ individuals’ unique healthcare needs (if these needs cannot be fully met in my own clinical setting).
I understand that these Standards of Care must be met regularly and continuously, and my failure to do so will result in a removal from the LGBTQ+ Affirming Healthcare Practitioner Directory.
